FreeCAD – Part 11: Face Plate & Neck Joint
In this lesson, we design the face plate and neck joint of the Millie Mini AI robot, creating the structural interface that connects the tablet enclosure to the neck shaft.
This lesson focuses on building a stable mechanical joint that unifies the head and body assemblies into one cohesive system.
Designing the Face Plate
We begin by modeling the structural face plate that anchors the tablet enclosure.
This lesson demonstrates how engineers create mounting plates that distribute structural loads and stabilize assemblies.
The goal here is to define a clean, strong interface between the enclosure and neck.
Creating the Neck Joint Interface
Next, we design the joint geometry that mechanically connects the head to the neck shaft.
In this lesson, we:
Define connection geometry
Align joint features concentrically
Establish stable mounting surfaces
Confirm balanced proportions
This ensures the head assembly attaches securely and accurately.
Refining Mounting Geometry
With the connection defined, we refine transitions and structural details.
In this lesson, we:
Adjust alignment between head and neck
Confirm clean part relationships
Maintain symmetry across the assembly
Blend structural and aesthetic elements
This creates a professional, cohesive upper assembly.
Finalizing the Head-to-Body Connection
Once refinement is complete, we lock in the structural relationship.
In this lesson, we:
Confirm precise axis alignment
Verify clean transitions
Finalize structural positioning
Complete the mechanical interface
The robot’s head and torso now function as a unified structure.
Result So Far
By the end of this lesson, you will have:
Designed the face plate
Created the neck joint interface
Refined mounting geometry
Integrated the head assembly with the body
Completed the robot’s full upper structural system
At this stage, the Millie Mini AI robot has a fully integrated body, neck, and head structure.
What’s Next
In the next lesson, we’ll continue refining the robot’s upper system and prepare it for final detailing and functional integration.
We’ll:
Add finishing structural elements
Prepare for hardware integration
Refine proportions and balance
Move closer to a production-ready design
The Millie Mini AI robot is now transitioning from structural modeling into functional system preparation.
